1327. Major-General Eyre Massey to [General Sir Henry Clinton]. A letter from Halifax [Nova Scotia] stating that the Corps of Marines had been embarked on board ship for some days and were resolved to sail. Admiral Byron and Captain Fielding had been ordered not to by General Sir William Howe so had to give up the command to Brigadier Maclane. Believes there were sufficient troops in Halifax to defend it, with 600 rebel and French prisoners there also.
