This series contains Children and Young Offenders files (CHN symbol series) of the Home Office Children's Department and Prison Department.
From 1971 Home Office files in this series relate solely to policy on treatment of young offenders, and the records were created by the Prison Department from that time.
Files are in former reference order.
From 2004 Home Office
The CHN series was used by the Home Office Children's Department which had responsibility for a wide range of issues relating to children, including guardianship, adoption, emigration, juvenile courts, remand and attendance centres. The Home Office passed the majority of responsibilities and files relating to the care of children to the Department of Health and Social Security in 1971. However the Home Office retained responsibility for policy in relation to the treatment of young offenders and the relevant CHN files continued to be used by the Prison Department. This series contains files in the CHN series which remained in use at the Home Office after the transfer of other CHN files to the DHSS.
