Description

Prisoner name: Harry James Shaw.

Prisoner occupation: Retired Major of the 61st Regiment of Foot.

Court and date of trial: Devon Quarter Sessions held at Exeter in 1824.

Crime: Writing letters to seek satisfaction from Edward Divett for an insult offered to him and his daughter.

Initial sentence: £20 fine and six months' imprisonment. Recognisance to keep the peace for two years in the sum of £200 or two sureties of £100 each.

Annotated (Outcome): Remission of imprisonment prepared June 1824.

Petitioner(s): Two petitions from prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Complains about the brutal treatment of his arrest; intends to apply to King's Bench for an abuse of magisterial authority.
