Description

Recommendation for the mitigation of sentence for selected prisoners on board the Ganymede convict hulk.

Names and details of prisoners:

James Francis, aged 25, convicted at Chester [Cheshire] on 1 September 1819 of stealing wearing apparel. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation.

Isaac Barton, aged 19, convicted at Nottingham [Nottinghamshire] on 13 January 1820 of stealing money from a drawer in a shop. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation.

Thomas Osborne, aged 21, convicted at Leicester [Leicestershire] on 20 March 1820 of stealing two pairs of stockings and two handkerchiefs. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation.

Josiah Newell (or Josiah Newill), aged 32, convicted at Chester on 5 April 1820 of being an accessory to the theft of a coach parcel. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation.

Thomas Pimlott, aged 20, convicted at Chester on 5 April 1820 of poaching. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation.

James Dean, aged 32, convicted at London on 17 May 1820 of obtaining store under false pretences. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation.

Thomas Brackenborough, aged 19, convicted at Middlesex on 15 September 1819 of stealing two tablecloths. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation.

Henry Lloyd, aged 24, convicted at Middlesex on 12 April 1820 of stealing beef. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation.

Gaoler's name: John Capper, Superintendent.

Grounds for clemency (Recommendation Details): Served more than half their sentence with good behaviour.

Annotated (Recommendation Details): Pardon prepared 26 January 1824.
