Administrative / biographical background

The Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) was established in January 1944 by the supreme commander of allied forces in Europe, General Eisenhower. It absorbed a number of predecessor headquarters and planning bodies, principally COSSAC. Based initially in Bushy Park, Middlesex, it was responsible for planning and executing Operation Overlord and subsequent operations to defeat German forces in western Europe. Its responsibilities included overall command of relevant signals intelligence activities.
