Selected under Acquisition Policy criterion 2.2.1.3 to document UK intelligence interception and decryption of Iranian military communications in the Second World War.
There were close links between Nazi Germany and the Iranian government of Shah Reza before the outbreak of the Second World War, with a resulting strong presence of German agents and advisers in Tehran. The communications of military attachés with the government in Iran from Axis capitals were targetted by GC&CS as a possible source of information from the outbreak of the war until August 1941, when British and Russian forces invaded Iran to expel German agents, and the discredited Shah abdicated.
