Administrative / biographical background

The Airports Policy Division was established in 1974 as part of the Department of the Environment's South-East Region Planning Department. By 1977 references in the Civil Service Year Book to this division cease, however, 'Airports' is a function allocated to the Chief Planning Officer in the Departments of the Environment and Transport Regional Offices for the South-East from 1977 to 1980. The papers with covering dates from 1946 to 1973 on files in this class did not originate in the Division, but are instead documents submitted to the Heathrow Terminal 4 Inquiry which provide a pretty full history of development at Heathrow Airport and its predecessors
