Administrative / biographical background

The Hazardous Substances Group was set up when the Health and Safety Commission and the Health and Safety Executive was established by the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act of 1974. There were four main divisions: Branch A dealing with explosives; Branch B concerning flammables; Branch C focusing on toxics and corrosives; and Branch E specialising in Major Hazards.
