Administrative / biographical background

The Admiralty Research Establishment (ARE) came into existence on 1 April 1984, by the bringing together of the three Sea Systems Research and Development Establishments of the Ministry of Defence - the Admiralty Marine Technology Establishment (AMTE), the Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment (ASWE), and the Admiralty Underwater Weapons Establishment (AUWE).

ARE became part of the Defence Research Agency (DRA) in 1991.
