This series consists of files raised by the Museum Secretary in his role of Establishment Officer, and relate to all aspects of the employment of staff. It includes files relating to the different classes and grades of staff, to individual posts, to part-time and to voluntary workers. There are also files dealing with staff matters such as appraisal, promotion, training, travel, leave, discipline, and honours. There are files relating to the unions and staff associations, to the Standing Commission on Museums and Galleries, to acts of parliament relating to the Museum and its work, and to the Museum's supervising Department.
Series held at The Natural History Museum are catalogued more fully in its online catalogue (reference DF ADM/1009). Online descriptions of some individual records can also be viewed on Discovery, see DF 1009.
Arrangement of the files was alphabetical by file title.
The filing system was set up in 1921 when the Reports and Letters series (DF 1000) was closed, and was administered by the Museum Secretary's staff within the Director's Office. Some earlier papers were incorporated when the first files were opened. The series was active until 1972 when a new registry was set up, combining the Establishment Officer's Files with the Case and Policy series (DF 1004).
