The series contains details of salaries and wages paid to established staff together with payments made to temporary and casual staff and expert consultants. The establishment books and wages ledgers are arranged alphabetically or by grade, and contain name, date of birth, rank and date of appointment, details of any temporary transfers or wartime service, summary of annual salary, and details of monthly or weekly payments, together with bonuses and insurance payments. These are printed volumes completed in manuscript. Volumes listing payments to temporary workers are entirely manuscript and contain details of all payments to expert consultants and staff retained after retirement paid out of subhead A3. The pay history sheets are loose Kalamazoo forms, completed in manuscript, giving basic personal information and a summary of pay, allowances and deductions.
Series held at The Natural History Museum are catalogued more fully in its online catalogue (reference DF ADM/1006). Online descriptions of some individual records can also be viewed on Discovery, see DF 1006.
Pay was dealt with by a clerk working for the Museum Secretary in the early days of the Museum, until an accounts section was set up with the appointment of Thomas Wooddisse as Acountant in 1931. The Finance Section became part of the newly formed Department of Administrative Services in 1975.
