Folios 2-3. Petition of John Mason to Newcastle. Petitioning for a free pardon. Former servant to Mrs Matthews; charged with defrauding her of £20 bank note. Found guilty and sentenced to transportation for seven years. Received an 'Undeniable Charecter from those he before had Served' and was moved from ship to Newgate prison. Filed with:
1. Folios 4-5. Judge Wright's report on case of John Mason, tried for stealing bank note from Elizabeth Matthew, his employer. Mason tried to spend note on 16 November using the name Turner, at shop of Mr Philips, linen draper in Cheapside [Middlesex]. Payment was stopped by Mr Neale at the bank. Mason claimed note came from Mr Sands, barber in Holborn [Middlesex], but later admitted he took it. Wright does not recommend King's mercy.
