Folios 64-65. Draft. Newcastle to Sir George Oxenden. Apologising for delayed response to Oxenden's last letter; busy because of events in Scotland. Invasion from France seems to be suspended or laid aside. Duke [of Cumberland] has forced rebels [Jacobites] into 'a precipitate flight' in Scotland. Difficulties with putting coastal forts in 'proper state of Defence', due to rules of the Board of Ordnance. Can only provide arms from Tower [of London] to troops raised on commission from King or Lords Lieutenant. Dated at Whitehall [Middlesex].
