Folio 61. Information of George Rigg, haymaker of Carlisle [Cumberland]. Mr Backhouse (Mayor of Carlisle) was 'Tormented' by rebels [Jacobites], and only acted against government because of 'Compulsion and fear'. Sworn before Richard Gilpin, recorder. Dated at Carlisle. Filed with:
1. Folio 62. Information of Richard Jackson, gentleman of Carlisle. Rebels guarded Carlisle gates constantly; they refused to let anyone leave when Young Pretender [Charles Edward Stuart] was in town, unless they had a pass from Duke of Perth. Rebels compelled Mayor and Mr Pearson (town clerk) to act against government. Sworn before William Tate, Justice of the Peace. Dated at Carlisle.
2. Folio 63. Information of Adam Smith, yeoman of Carlisle. Rebels constantly guarded gates while in possession of city. Mayor was taken to Carlisle Castle and told not to leave town 'upon pain of military Execution'. Sworn before William Tate. Dated at Carlisle.
