Folios 123-126. Draft of letter from Duke of Newcastle to Field Marshal [George] Wade, concerning the threatened [Jacobite] rebel invasion of England. Advises that General Sir John Legonnier has been ordered to march towards Chester [Cheshire], to make himself 'master of the River Mersey in order to prevent the rebels getting into north Wales'. He is subject to Wade's orders, commanding the regiments of General Bland's dragoons, Duke of Montagu's horse, Duke of Kingstone's horse, and the foot regiments of generals Howard, Sowle, Douglas, Johnston, Bligh, Skelton, and Semple, Duke of Bedford, the Earl of Halifax, Lord Gower, and the Marquis of Granby. Advises of a 'pair of shoes and stockings for each effective man', both English and Dutch, in his troops. Also reports of Lord John Drummond's rebel regiment embarking at Dunkirk, and a squadron from Brest [France]. Mentions 'Over, the messenger'. Dated at Whitehall [London, Middlesex].
