Description

Folios 54-57.

Folio 54-55. Doctor John Waugh to [Duke of Newcastle] with latest intelligence that [Jacobite] rebels had advanced to Longtown [Cumberland]. Refers to the capture of a rebel quartermaster in Ecclefecen [Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire]. Dated at Carlisle [Cumberland]. Enclosing:

Folio 56. [Unknown to unknown] with intelligence of 2,000 rebels in Moffat [Dumfriesshire], including Marquess of Tullibardine, Duke of Perth, Lord Ogilby [Ogilvy], Lord George Murray, Earl of Kilmarnock, and Lord Nairn. Mentions rebels at Lord Cornwath's house.

Folio 56. From Provost of Annan [Bryce Blair] with intelligence of rebels in Moffat, billeting with farmers. Dated at Bowness [Cumberland].

Folio 56. From a Scotch clergyman in Canaby [Canonbie, Dumfriesshire], with intelligence that rebels have reached there, having marched down Liddesdale, mentioning Lady Ogilvy's servant at Westerhall [Dumfriesshire], and Mr Baty [Bety], a clergyman living on the 'utmost limit of the English side [of the border]'. Rebels say they're 21,000 strong. Dated at Kirkandrews [Dumfriesshire, Cumberland].

Folio 56. From the Canonbie clergyman above, with intelligence also of Langholm [Dumfriesshire], and reporting that the 'Pretender's son' [Charles Edward Stuart] is staying with the Duke of Beauclerc's [Buccleuch's] steward, Mr Boston, and is due at Mr Scott's house at Rowanburn [Dumfriesshire] for four nights. Rebels making enquires about Brampton [Cumberland] and the road by Longtown [Cumberland]. Macleods and Frasers in Edinburgh.

Folio 57. Postmaster of Dumfries to Mr Goldie, advising that the rebels were demanding billets for 6,000 men. Reports rebels saying they enlisted out of fear, and would readily desert.

Folio 57. Provost of Annan [Bryce Blair] with intelligence from Dumfries, mentioning 'the Carse of Kennell', and Moffat. Baggage arrived in Lockarby [Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire]. Horse taken from Sir John Douglas's stables, and from Mr Johnston, and searched for at Hoddom Castle [Dumfriesshire].
