Description

Folios 31-35. Wm [William] Wood to [Andrew] Stone with papers from Collector and Comptroller of Harwich to Customs Commissioners concerning suspected Jacobites. Dated at Custom House. Enclosures:

Folio 32. G Davies and Fras [Francis] Putham, concerning two Scotsmen, James Grieve and George Grieve, both of Dundee [Angus], arrived about the John and Alice, John Simpson master, who had given a contradictory story concerning their whereabouts after the Battle of Prestonpans. They state, by one account, that they'd escaped aboard the Fox man-o-war, and by another, that they saw 'the Pretender' [Charles Edward Stuart] with General Cope's captured standard at Holyrood House in Edinburgh. Dated at Custom House, Harwich. Enclosing:

Folio 33. Alex M Donald to Alex Campbell, silk-weaver, Monmouth Street, 'opposite to true mans [Truman's?] brew house' Spittlefields [London, Middlesex], and its bearer was Mr Grive, a silk merchant from Dundee [Angus]. Post script says 'except a visit from your Highland friends soon and Prince Charles [Edward Stuart] upon their head'. Letter is endorsed: 'This man is a gardener about ¼ of a mile from Dundee'. Dated at Didhop.

Folio 34. John Peirson Junior to James Grieve, merchant, care of Mr William Miller, bookseller, near the Cross, Edinburgh, concerning sugar and cloth. Mentions 'Prince Charles' being in Edinburgh, and that 'trade is very dead'. Dated at Dundee.
