Description

Folios 27-30. Lieutenant General R Handasyd [to Duke of Newcastle] stating that 'the [Jacobite] rebels desert in numbers. A panick has seized them'. Dated at Berwick [upon Tweed, Northumberland, Berwickshire]. Enclosing:

Folio 28-29. Intelligence from Wm [William] Mitchell of Preston [Berwickshire], reporting 4,000 [Jacobite] rebels in Blackdub near Dalkeith [Midlothian], mentioning deployment in Lauder [Berwickshire], Temple [Midlothian], Dalhousie [Castle, Midlothian?], Carrington [Midlothian], Ancram [Ancrum, Roxburgh?], Peebles [Peeblesshire], Ettleston, Moffat [Dumfriesshire], Drummellieur [Drumpellieur, Lanarkshire?], Traquair [Peeblesshire], their train of artillery, and Colonel Stuart.

Folio 30. Intelligence from Jo [Joseph] Douglas and Wilm [William] Currer of Selkirk [Selkirkshire], reporting that the rebels at Peebles had marched through Selkirk for Carlisle [Cumberland]. Mentions a well-mounted English gentleman who'd been eleven years in the French service with 1,000 guineas, saying they were headed to London. Mentions Moffat, Jedborough [Roxburghshire], Langtonn [Berwickshire], Hawick [Roxburghshire], and John Murray of Broughton.
