Description (What the record is about)
-
This series consists of a single volume containing correspondence, memoranda, printed papers, and newscuttings relating to the northern boundary of the Museum's site at South Kensington.
The original boundary of 1881, marked by a fence, ran close to the Spirit Building which was erected in 1882-1883. In 1899 a new boundary was fixed to the satisfaction of the Trustees, but in 1910 the Office of Works proposed to draw yet another boundary, closer to the Museum buildings, to allow for construction of the Science Museum. This proposal led to protests, petitions and questions in the House of Commons. The northern boundary of the Museum was again a matter of dispute in 1990.
Series held at The Natural History Museum are catalogued more fully in its online catalogue (reference DF DIR/934). Online descriptions of some individual records can also be viewed on Discovery, see DF 934.
