A complete set of minutes is to be preserved. This relates to collection themes 2.2.1 policy and administrative processes of the state and 2.2.1.5 formulation and delivery of social policies of the collections policy
The Advisory Board for the Research Councils replaced the Council for Scientific Policy in 1972 in accordance with the White Paper" Framework for Government Research and Development" (Cmnd 5046).
The new body was responsible for:-
advising the Secretary of State on her responsibilities for Civil Science with particular reference to the Research Council system, its relationship with the universities and Departments, the support of postgraduate students and the proper balance between international and national scientific activities advising the Secretary of State on the allocation of the science budget among the Research Councils and other bodiespromoting close liaison between the Councils and the users of their research
Each of the five Research Councils, the University Grants Committee, senior scientists from Departments with a major interest in the work of the Research Councils and the Chief Scientific Adviser were represented on the Board as well as independent members drawn from the universities, industry and the Royal Society of London.
The Secretariat for the Board was provided by the Department of Education and Science.
