The Army Personnel Research Establishment (APRE) formed in April 1965 to carry out research into aspects of warfare as they apply to the creating and maintaining of an efficient fighting soldier. The Establishment's origins were the physiologists and psychologists in the Clothing and Equipment Physiological Research Establishment (CEPRE) [WO 352], the Military Operational Research Unit (MORU) and the Human Factors Division of the Army Operational Research Group (AORG) [both WO 291].
APRE was sited at Farnborough and was responsible to Chief Scientist (Army) through the Director of Army Operational Science and Research. Its work included research into the ergonomics of weapons, environmental effects on humans, nutrition, clothing, personnel selection including studies of recruitment, re-engagement and wastage and training techniques. APRE also co-operated with other Army branches on specific topics, often overseas.
The Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) was formed in 1995 and APRE absorbed into DERA's Centre for Human Sciences.
