Description (What the record is about)
-
This series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence of the Zoology Library, kept in a series between 1916-1926 and 1929-1948. Subject matter includes the acquisition of library material, enquiries, loans, and library accommodation and equipment. It also contains other miscellaneous correspondence and a series of internal memoranda 1935-1977, of which more recent files are held in the Modern Records Store.
The main people featured in the correspondence are various heads of Zoology (a lot of the correspondence surviving from 1916-1930s is signed by W T Calman, the Deputy Keeper of Zoology, later Keeper) and the Zoology Librarians. These are John Saunders ([1847?]-1900), Herbert William England (1900-1937), Frederick Charles Sawyer (1937-1966), Gavin Douglas Ruthven Bridson (1966-1969) and Ann Datta, nee Lucas (1969-present).
Series held at The Natural History Museum are catalogued more fully in its online catalogue (reference DF ZOO/271). Online descriptions of some individual records can also be viewed on Discovery, see DF 271.
