Records of the Justices of Assize from 1554 to 1971 relating to the central control of justice and administration at a local level. They include records relating to actions originating in the courts at Westminster which were tried at assizes under nisi prius procedure.
The records are mainly arranged by circuits:
- Home, Norfolk and South-Eastern Circuits
- Midland Circuit
- Northern and North-Eastern Circuits
- Oxford Circuit
- Welsh Circuits including Chester
- Western Circuit
- Cross-Circuit Records
There are also three series organised by record type which cross circuit boundaries.
The following 14 series numbers have not been used: ASSI 7, ASSI 17- ASSI 20, ASSI 27, ASSI 29, ASSI 48 - ASSI 50, ASSI 56, and ASSI 68 - ASSI 70.
