The files in this series deal with four types of expedition:
- Expeditions organised and financed by the Museum
- Expeditions organised by some other institution but supported and staffed by the Museum
- Expeditions financed by private individuals for the benefit of the Museum
- Expeditions run independently of the Museum, but which it helped with equipment and advice, and in return received specimens for the collections
The last type are much the most numerous.
