Description (What the record is about)
-
This series contains files on a wide range of topics. There are files on organisations such as Freshwater Biological Association, the National Oceanographic Council, the National Institute of Oceanography, and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. Files on named collections include the Richard H Beddome's Indian Mollusca, Edward T Browne's Medusae, and A M Ollala's Peruvian material. Files on individuals include Lord Moyne, Professor George Matthai, Dr David A Bannerman and Professor J Stanley Gardiner. Other files relate to pieces of legislation, such as the long series on the protection of animals, 1914-1921, on the Importation of Plumage Bill (1921), and on the Seafood Industries Bill (1937). Another group of files were raised by Martin A C Hinton when he was Deputy Keeper, and document his work in the musk rat control campaign of 1930-1933. Finally, there are administrative files relating to the exhibition galleries in the Museum, to the Zoology Library and to the specialist sections of the Department.
These files were not registered, but were kept in a series of subject boxes. They were raised in the Keeper's office and contain his correspondence and memoranda.
Series held at The Natural History Museum are catalogued more fully in its online catalogue (reference DF ZOO/206). Online descriptions of some individual records can also be viewed on Discovery, see DF 206.
