Folio(s) 511-512. Letter from William McDowall, Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, stating that a corps of volunteer artillery consisting of three companies of 100 men each under the command of Captain Duncan Campbell had been formed in June 1797 and had become a valuable defence of the town of Greenock. On the division of one company, trained in the use of field artillery and small arms, into two light companies from 16 March 1798, the additional officers had had been paid but their appointments had never been gazetted. McDowall asks for this to be remedied as follows: Lieutenant James Noble to be captain, 2nd Lieutenant Walter Bain to be 1st lieutenant, Robert Blair to be 1st lieutenant, Thomas Crawford to be 2nd lieutenant, and William Shirra to be 2nd lieutenant. McDowall also asks for the staff of the corps to be gazetted from 15 June 1797: Archibald McLachlan, chaplain; Thomas Miller, surgeon; and Robert Lindsay, quartermaster.
