Folio(s) 481-486. Letter from Henry Hutson, in the absence of the Secretary of the Board of Customs, notifying the Board's compliance, as directed by [Nicholas Vansittart], Joint Secretary to the Treasury, with the Home Secretary's request to instruct their officers to arrest John Grimes and Wiliam Pooley for treasonable practices. Hutson encloses copies of a letter from the Collector and Controller of Customs at Leigh in Essex and the enclosed descriptions of two people named Grimes and one named Pooley.
Enclosed is a letter of 11 September to the Commissioners of Customs from John Loten, Collector, and T Simpson, Comptroller, at the Custom House, Leigh. Pooley, alias Wenum, frequents the neighbourhood, is suspected of being a smuggler, but is thought at present to be in the eastern part of the county or in Suffolk. There are two persons called John Grimes on the Island of Foulness within the jurisdiction of the port of Leigh. The elder is there but the son is supposed to be on a gun brig stationed off Bradwell. Physical descriptions are included.
