Folio(s) 469. Letter from William Stephen Poyntz, Cowdray Lodge, Midhurst [Sussex], enclosing copies of two letters [not present] delivered to him by Paine, the foreman of a paper mill at Iping. The letters throw some light on a combination of national proportions which may not be confined to paper making. Poyntz will not commit the bearer, Midhurst, a principal workman in the Sickle paper mill near Haslemere [Surrey], without further direction. Paine had opened the letters brought to Iping by Midhurst and had read them, whereupon the workmen at the mill had gone on strike and demanded 3 shillings a week increase. They had returned to work on being read the 5th and 9th Articles of the Act relative to Paper Makers.
