Description

Folio(s) 457-462. Report from Thomas Wiffin [King's Messenger] stating that on 31 August 1801 he had received a warrant to arrest William Pooley and John Grimes. He had travelled to Ipswich [Suffolk] to deliver a letter to Mr Jackerman, magistrate, who was willing to assist in the arrest. Jackerman knew of, but had not recently seen, Pooley but did not know of Grimes. Both were seafaring men and might be known at the Custom House. Mr Loyd, deputy collector at Ipswich, said he knew John Grimes well and that he was master of the boat Liberty, registered at Ipswich, which had been seized at Prittlewell near Maldon, Essex. Grimes had not gone to recover the boat as he feared being pressed. He was known as a smuggler and bad character.

Jackerman and Loyd had not been able to find any evidence of their whereabouts. Pooley was reported to have said that he lived in Sedburn [Sudbourne] between Orford and Aldbrough [Aldeburgh]. Pooley's brother Benjamin said William was recently in Ipswich, and Smith, landlord of the Crown and Cock said Pooley had lodged there but left owing money. On returning to Ipswich there was no report of the pair being seen. It is suggested that a circular letter be sent to Custom Houses to carry out an arrest on their appearance and to notify London.

Also a list of custom houses to be circularised: Prittlewell, Maldon, Harwich (all Essex), Ipswich, Woodbridge, Orford, Aldbrough [Aldeburgh] and Southwold (all Suffolk).

Also a copy of the Register entry for the Liberty, John Grimes master.
