Description

Folio 318.

To: The General Board of Health.

From: S E Piper, Officer of Health, Darlington Local Board of Health, [County Durham].

Subject Matter: Letter sending the return of deaths for the quarter ending 25 September 1853. The number of deaths from all causes was 51, a decrease of 25 on the corresponding quarter the previous year. Piper does not remember a time when the town has been in a healthier condition, and this at a time when cholera has occurred in one of the neighbouring towns. He attributes this in great measure to the prompt action taken by the Local Board of Health. Of the 51 people who died, 18 were males and 33 females. 24 were under 15 years of age, 12 above 15 and under 60, and 15 were over 60. Mortality from zymotic or epidemic disease was only nine, whereas in the corresponding quarter the previous year 39 people died from these causes. The causes of death in this quarter were: diarrhoea: 7; phthisis: 10; dysentery: 2; pneumonia: 2; bronchitis: 2; haemorrhage: 2; dropsy: 1; hydrocephalus: 1; enteritis: 1; phrenitis: 1; inflammation of kidneys: 1; paralysis: 1; apoplexy: 1; marasmus: 12; debility: 1; accident: 1; convulsions: 7; old age: 8.
