The Social Security Medical Division was responsible for the management of full and part-time medical staff based in Social Security regions, medical aspects of social security statistics and medical evidence on incapacity for work amongst other tasks. It provided specialist medical advice to the Social Security divisions and was divided into branches; MEDSSM1 benefit schemes, MEDSSM2 prescribed respiratory industrial diseases etc. and regional offices as well as pneumoconiosis medical panels.
The Medical Division's main role was to give advice, with or without a medical examination, on benefit claims to help the Decision-Maker reach a fair and proper decision on eligibility for benefit.
When the Benefits Agency was formed in 1991, the Medical Division was renamed the Benefits Agency Medical Service (BAMS) and formed part of the Next Steps agency. Later the service was contracted out to SEMA Group Medical Services and became known as Medical Services.
