Folio 142.
To: The General Board of Health.
From: Edward S Dakins, Pembury, Tunbridge [Kent].
Subject Matter: Letter replying to queries respecting the health of the district which he attends. Dakins remarks that there appears to be little difference in the character of the fever which has prevailed of late and that which is usually met with under the ordinary form of 'Low Typhoid Fever'. He notes that the only difference is that, in most instances, the 'malady' has been ushered in by 'much congestion about the lungs'. Dakins explains that the 'special causes' seem to be principally arising from the overcrowded state of many of the dwellings; the 'extreme wet state of the country'; and from 'many of the children being badly fed and ill clothed, and living in situations immediately upon a level with brooks and rivers, rendering the cottages in many places unfit for the habitation of man'.
