To: The General Board of Health.
From: Dr J M Pope, Town Malling [Kent].
Subject Matter: Letter replying to queries respecting an epidemic in Malling Union. Pope remarks that of the cases which have come under his observation in the Malling Union [Work]house, the character of the epidemic has been that of 'Bilious Remittent Fever' - commencing with 'bilious vomiting' and occasionally diarrhoea. He explains that he has attended 14 cases in the last six months, of which 5 have proved fatal. Pope states that he is disposed to attribute the epidemic to 'the state of the atmosphere'.
