Folio 7.
To: George E McCulloch, Observer Office, Stirling, [Stirlingshire, Scotland].
From: The General Board of Health.
Subject Matter: Draft letter acknowledging receipt of a letter dated 5 January 1849, calling attention to the extensive nuisances existing in the town of Stirling. McCulloch is advised that there appears to be little doubt that the dunghill and Mill-dam are nuisances coming within the scope of the Nuisances Removal Act and the regulations of the General Board, 'which would require the removal of the first and the cleansing and scouring and keeping in a clean condition of the second'. With regard to the contemplated erection of the Slaughter House, the Board are said to have no power to interfere, except in such towns as come under the Public Health Act 1848. It is explained that the Act is at present confined to England, and that the Board 'cannot pretend to offer any advice on the matter'.
