On 1 January 1975 staff of the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health of the Department of Employment joined the Health and Safety Executive. They included, amongst others, the staff of HM Factory Inspectorate who remained under the direction of HM Chief Inspector of Factories. In 1985 the inspectorate headquarters moved from Chapel Street, London to Magdalen House, Bootle. In 1987, it was merged with the Agricultural Inspectorate Division and in 1990 the joint division was renamed the Field Operations Division.
