Description

Folios 103-104. Affidavits on behalf of George Hamilton of Red House [Redhouse Castle, East Lothian], witnessed and signed by Hew Dalrymple, senator of the College of Justice:

Folio 103. Affidavit of John Nisbet, a writer in Edinburgh, swearing that Hamilton had been in financial difficulty for some years, and mentioning a lost lawsuit. In consequence, he could not afford his ambition of purchasing an ensign's commission in the King's army. Dated at Edinburgh. Filed with:

Folio 103. Affidavit of John Brown, Edinburgh merchant, and Andrew Alves, clerk to the King's Signet, swearing that they unsuccessfully tried to find Hamilton a commission in the Dutch Service, contacting for the purpose Sir John Scott of Ancram, and William McGhie, merchant in Edinburgh, both captains. Dated at Edinburgh.

Folios 103-104. Affidavit of William Montgomery, Edinburgh merchant, as above. Also mentions Hamilton's applications to his cousin the Earl of Rothes, and to John Davidson of Whitehouse. Dated at Edinburgh.

Folio 104. Affidavit of John Davidson of Whitehouse, principal clerk of the High court of Justiciary, swearing that, in order to secure a commission in the British or 'Scots Dutch' army, Hamilton asked him to apply to James Lessly [Leslie], brother of the Earl of Rothes. Dated at Edinburgh.
