Folio 193-197. Earl of Findlater and Seafield to [Andrew] Stone, accompanying a petition from the Corporation of Shoemakers of Edinburgh for the Duke of Newcastle. Dated at Cheam, Surrey. Enclosing:
Folio 194. Petition for mercy of Alexander Davidson of Edinburgh, shoemaker and prisoner under sentence of death at Carlisle [Cumberland]. When the rebels took Edinburgh he attempted to join the King's forces, applying to Mr Geens in the Grays [Royal Scots Greys, cavalry regiment?], but was rejected due to his advanced age. Therefore he states he was forced to join the [Jacobite] rebels or see his family starve.
Folios 195-196. Letter from members of the corporation of shoemakers in Edinburgh, written at the request of Lady Balgowan, in support of Alexander Davidson. Explains that he found himself in poverty, and having been denied a position in the King's service he was forced to turn to the rebels. Confirms that 'the old Lady Balgowan or Lady Christian' will also write a letter of support for Davidson. Signed by John?Craige; Thomas Dick; James Hunter; John Drysdale; Alexr [Alexander] Taylor; George Penman; Wil [William] Sutherland. Dated at Edinburgh, 30 September 1746.
