Folios 149 - 150. Letter from the attorney general [Sir Dudley Ryder] to [John] Sharpe, concerning the first prosecutions under the new [1746 Smuggling] Act. States opinion that the evidence, taken by Sir Walter Parker [William Parker, Thomas Parker?] in Sussex, may not be sufficient to prosecute the smugglers; he wants the case to set a strong precedent for the new law.
