Lancelot Allgood, Sheriff of Northumberland, to the Duke of Newcastle, concerning the return of horses belonging to Roman Catholics in the county, which were seized following the Battle of Prestonpans to prevent the rebels [Jacobites] making use of them, conceding that one was sized unlawfully. Dated at Hexham [Northumberland]. Enclosing:
Folio 70. Copy of a letter from Edward Charlton to John Reed, of Chipchase [Northumberland], refusing to accept the return of his horses, due to their [poor] condition and the 'great sum that you charge for the keeping of them'. Dated 12 September 1746 at Hesleyside [Northumberland].
Folio 71. Copy of a letter from Thomas Errington, late of Beaufront, to Sir Edward Blackett of Hexham, stating that the horses taken from his property belonged to his daughter, who would need to be informed of Sir Edward's costs before accepting their return. Dated 20 September 1746 at Sandhoe [Northumberland].
