Copy of Duke of Newcastle to Captain Stratford Eyre, informing him that the council had decided some of the [Jacobite] prisoners detained aboard transport ships off the coast of Tilbury Fort [Essex] should be send for trial to provide 'a speedy example'. Others were to be allowed to petition for mercy, and the document is endorsed with a note stating that Captain Eyre 'provided 351 prisoners to petition for transportation'. Dated at Whitehall [London, Middlesex]. Enclosing:
Folio 43. Copy of the Order in Council detailing a process of drawing lots by which one-in-twenty of the rebel prisoners should be selected for trial and punishment. Dated 23 July 1746 at the Court at Kensington.
