Wm [William] Wood to [Andrew] Stone, with a letter from the Isle of Man sent by Peter Sidebotham, and copies of examinations and supporting documents connected with two [Jacobite rebel] suspects, James Napier and Wm [William] Simsone [Simpson], for the attention of the Duke of Newcastle. Dated at Custom House, London. Enclosing:
Folio 50. Copy of letter to the Commissioners of Customs from Peter Sidebotham enclosing examinations of suspects Napier and Simsone, released from detention in the Isle of Man, but now held in Scotland. Suggests connection to a Montgomery, alias Lockhart. Refers to a quantity of lead ore from the Duke of Atholl's mines, once owned by the late Sir John Ireskine [?Erskine], aka Hopson, a [Jacobite] sympathiser during 1715, who'd leased the mines. Describes the smuggling of brandy in Dutch boats, and of wool landed at Ramsey from Scotland. Describes the clergyman Thos [Thomas] Christian, restored to office by the Bishop, as continuing his 'impudent and traiterous' speeches. Dated at Douglas, Isle of Man. Enclosing:
Folio 51. Copies of examinations of James Napier, of Kirk Monuck near Glasgow, and Wm Simsone, born in Glasgow [Lanarkshire]. The suspects state that they're chapmen, that they're Presbyterian, that they'd arrived in Man from Pawfoot [Powfoot] Dumfriesshire in the boat of Christian of Ramsey, and that they had a letter of recommendation from Sir John Douglas of Kellhead, near Annandale, to Mr Harris [Harries] a local merchant. Dated at Castle Rushden, Isle of Man, on 24 May 1746.
Folios 51 - 52. Copies of conditional releases from custody of Napier, Simpson, and Harris. Signed Capt Joh [John] Quayle. Dated at Isle of Man, on 1746 May 24.
Folio 52. Copy of certification by Sir Wm [William] Maxwell in favour of James Napier and Wm Simsone, stating they were 'not concerned in the [Jacobite] Rebellion'. Dated at Springkell, Dumfriesshire, on 1 June 1746.
Folio 52. Copy of sworn certification of Sir William Maxwell's signature, by Thos [Thomas] Innes. Dated at Castletown [Isle of Man].
Folio 52. Copy of sworn certification of Sir William Maxwell's signature, by Charles Harries, with statement that Sir William's certification came in a letter from Mr Robinson, the teacher of Sir William's children. Dated at Lindesay.
Folio 52. Copy of sworn statement and accounts, by Charles Harries, of business done between himself, and Napier and Simsone. Says he sent his bill for payment to Scotland with Robt [Robert] Erwing [?]. Dated at Insula Mona [Isle of Man], on 5 July 1746.
