Description

Folios 38-43. Copy of declarations the tenants of [Icolmkill, Iona], and John McLean: Duncan Morison [Morrison]; John McInnish Senr[Senior]; John McInnish Junr [Junior]; John McFarlan; John McNiel [McNeil] of Collonsay [Colonsay, Argyllshire]; and John McIllivoile [McIlvoile]. Concerns a ship said to have belonged to 'Prince Charles' [Charles Edward Stuart], which appeared 'some few days before Hallow Day' [late October 1745?], between Jura and Collonsay [Colonsay], and subsequently made a three-week trip to Barra [Inverness-shire]. Master:?Ultock?Kinderson [?Rinderson]. John McLean was pilot, and he administered oaths of secrecy. Others said to be aboard were: John McLean of Trieshnish, Donald McLean, Neill [Neil] McLean, John Morison, Archibald McGilp, Donald [?] Hichivan, John Black, and John McFarlan. John McNeil states that in Barra, the ship was visited by McDonald of Brisdale, the priest and Laird of Barra, and some gentlemen of Uist [Inverness-shire]. John McIllivoile stated McNeill of Watersea came aboard too, and spoke of payments made 'in Spanish money'. Sworn before: Archibald Campbell of Stonefield, Sherrif Deput [deputy] of Argylshire, John Campbell, James Campbell, and Duncan McVicar Collector of Customs at Fort William [Inverness-shire]. Dated at Inverary [Argyllshire] between 1 and 4 September 1746.
