Folio 35. [Crown solicitor] Philip Carteret Webb to the Duke of Newcastle, containing a secretly copied letter. Dated at Carlisle [Cumberland]. Enclosing:
Folio 36-37. Copy of letter from Alex [Alexander] Robertson, to Donald McDonald of Kinloch Moydart [Moidart] a prisoner in Carlisle Castle [Cumberland] awaiting trial, describing how he's seeking to rally the support of 'our good & great friend'. Refers to a proposal to put £10,000 'in the government's way', and to the disarmament of the 'rebel clans'. Expresses optimism that the McDonalds will act to 'have your lives preserved'. Mentions 'your friend and my poor cousin Mr Spalding'. Dated at London on 30 August 1746.
