Folio 24. John Sharpe to [Thomas] Ramsden, forwarding two petitions in the case of a Roman Catholic priest, Nicholas Skelton, held prisoner [in Lancaster Castle, Lancashire] for corresponding with [Jacobite] rebels. Sees no objection to Skelton's case being discharged, as only one witness is to hand. Enclosing:
Folio 25. Petition from Skelton to Duke of Newcastle requesting a withdrawal or discharge of [the Duke of Newcastle's] warrant of detainer against him. Petitioner claims he has witnesses to his constant, peaceful residence in Leighton, Lancashire, and states that the only witness against him, Lawson, a Quaker now in America, had later said he'd been mistaken. Mentions detention by justices James Fenton and Marmaduke Drinkall for aiding rebels at Manchester [Lancashire].
Folio 26-27. Petition from Skelton to Newcastle, recalling a previous petition of about July last, containing facts outlined above. States that at the last Assizes the Solicitor for the Crown had not opposed bail, but that the Judge had ruled the petition of detainer needed first to be withdrawn. Dated at Lancaster [Lancashire].
