To: The Local Government Act Office.
From: Edward Sargent, Clerk to the Local Board of Health, Woolwich [Kent].
Subject Matter: Letter acknowledging receipt of a letter dated 26 June 1860. Sargent explains that the authority for the appropriation of the sum of ten guineas to the Metropolis Gas Committee of Enquiry was by a resolution of the Woolwich Local Board, at a meeting held on the 20 December 1859. He further explains that the purposes for which that sum was granted was to obtain a future supply of gas of the best quality and a cheaper rate than at present, and adds that the expenditure was based upon the assumption that the Act of Parliament, when obtained, would be beneficial to the ratepayers of the Parish. Sargent encloses two printed documents recently received from the Metropolis Gas Committee of Enquiry - one urging a further contribution from the Woolwich Local Board of Health, the other exhibiting an account of their receipts and disbursements to 26 June 1860, which includes a statement of the contributions from Vestries and District Boards within the Metropolis.
