Folio 505.
To: The Local Government Act Office.
From: Messrs Gray, Johnston and Mounsey, Solicitors, 5 Raymond Buildings, Gray's Inn, London.
Subject Matter: Letter advising that they have been instructed by Mr Askew of Conishead Priory, Ulverston to write in reference to an application which he is informed has been recently made to the Local Government Act Office by the Sewer Authority of Ulverston [Lancashire] for sanction to borrow a further £2000, on the security of the rates. Askew is said to have been informed that it is intended to use the loan to defray certain legal expenses incurred by the Sewage Committee in a Chancery suit brought against them for polluting a stream in direct violation of the Acts of Parliament under which they were acting, and of which suit they were ordered to pay the costs. Askew objects to these costs being paid out of money borrowed on the rates; 'and he urges that due enquiries should be made, and accounts furnished by the Committee, before sanction is given to a further loan'.
