Description

Folios 502-504.

To: The Local Government Act Office.

From: John Poole, Clerk to the Sewage Committee of the Sewer Authority, Ulverston [Lancashire].

Subject Matter: Letter advising that the extension of the main outlet sewer at Ulverston is now complete, and that, owing to the Committee having to carry out such works under pressure from the Court of Chancery, the cost of the work has exceeded the amount of the estimated cost (£1155 5s 0d). Poole explains that the Sewer Authority now have to meet the cost of the extension of the main sewer outlet and the expenses of the suit in Chancery which were thrown upon them, 'which may amount to between £400 and £600'. The Committee are said to feel that it would be 'a great and unjust hardship' to lay a rate to cover these costs, as they were incidental to carrying out and completing the work which had been sanctioned by the Home Secretary. Poole states that the Committee find that they will require about £1500 to pay off their present liabilities but that they desire to borrow £2000, 'as there are public extensions of the sewers now being continually applied for and they wish to avoid unnecessary applications'.
