Description

Folios 460-462.

To: The Home Secretary.

From: John Poole, Clerk to the Sewage Committee of the Sewer Authority, Ulverston [Lancashire].

Subject Matter: Letter advising that on the 22 January 1870, a Mr Wordsworth Harrison (the owner of the estate below the present outfall of the sewer shown upon the plan for draining the town of Ulverston, approved by the Home Secretary in august 1868) filed a Bill in the Court of Chancery, complaining that the Sewer Authority allowed the overflow from their tanks to fall into the Lund Beck [stream] which flows through and adjacent to the property of Mr Harrison. Poole explains that it was the original intention of the Committee to apply the sewage to irrigation purposes, but that owing to the 'dilute nature' of the sewage, and to the present difficulty of obtaining suitable land at a fair price, the Committee, to avoid the expense of contentious litigation, gave an undertaking to the Court to construct a sewer before the 1 July 1870, with an outfall below the estate of Harrison. The estimated cost of this additional work is said to be £1155 5s 0d. Poole adds that the sewage works originally sanctioned and approved by the Home Secretary are almost finished, and that they have been satisfactorily executed under the estimated cost. He states that when the Committee has ascertained its exact financial position, he will inform the Home Secretary whether a further loan, on account of the additional works, will be required.
