Folios 458-459.
To: The Local Government Act Office.
From: John Poole, Clerk to the Sewage Committee of the Sewer Authority, Ulverston [Lancashire].
Subject Matter: Letter acknowledging receipt of a letter dated 28 January 1870, enclosing a petition from Mr J S Sykes, a Member of the Committee of the Sewer Authority for Ulverston. Poole states that the Committee is greatly surprised that Sykes should have forwarded the petition without intimating an intention to do so to the other members of the Committee; 'and the sending of which, to say the least of it, was most irregular'. As to the proceedings in question, the Committee are said to have been advised by Counsel that they are justified in resisting them, and that 'if the Committee are not to have power to do all things which are incident to the completion of the works - including the expenses of enforcing any contract or defending any action - the works might at any time be stopped, by unjust and vexatious litigation'. Poole adds that Mr Rawlinson, Superintending Inspector, will be able to furnish the facts in this case.
