Description

Folio 109. John Sharpe to Duke of Newcastle, summarising the trials [at St Margaret's Hill, Southwark, Surrey, of the first batch of Jacobite] rebel officers, mainly of the Manchester regiment. Enclosing:

Folios 110-113. Short state of the case of such of the English rebel prisoners who stood upon their defence and have been convicted under the Surrey Commission'. Offers a brief summary of the evidence against each accused, usually mentioning recruitment at Manchester [Lancashire], marching to Derby [Derbyshire], and capture at Carlisle [Cumberland], wearing of plaid sashes and white cockades, with any individual factors. Also summarises their defences, including forced recruitment, and terms of 'capitulation' at Carlisle. Accused: Colonel Francis Townley; David Morgan; Captain George Fletcher; Captain Thomas Deacon; Captain James Dawson; Captain John Sanderson; Lieutenant Thomas Chadwick; Lieutenant John Berwick; Ensign & Adjutant Thomas Siddall; Ensign William Brittough, alias Bretter; Ensigns Charles Deacon and James Wilding, aged 15; Captain Andrew Blood, alias Blyde and Ensign Christopher Taylor; Lieutenant Thomas Furnivall; Captains Alexander Abernethy and James Gad, of the Duke of Perth's regiment.
